Terrace of the Villa Banac
This
magnificent terrace which affords a complete view of the magic of both
Cavtat and Dubrovnik is located in the heart of Cavtat's bay between
the two peninsulas Sustjepan and Rat, which are covered by hundreds
and hundreds of old pine trees. This location offers a breathtaking
view to both the performers and the audience under the starry night
sky, in close vicinity to the sea, which is as still as a mirror. Nowadays,
the Vila is a residence of the Municipality of the Konavle region.
In the past it belonged to a wealthy shipowning family, the Banac's.
In Front of the Church of St. Nicholas
A
charming square in front of the parish church of St Nicholas with attractive
stairs nicely shaped in Renaissance style.
Inside of the Church of St. Nicholas
The
Cavtat parish church from the 15th century is situated next to the
Rector's Palace. The church interior is Baroque and is filled with
the work of well-known painters. The parish church is also home to
a painting vault, founded in 1952, thanks to Academic Cvito Fiskovic
and many others. Among the numerous valuable works of art are icons
bearing images of St. Nicholas from the 15th century, the alabaster
relief from the 15th century, St. Sebastian by the Baroque master of
the Bologna school Benedetto Genarri, works by Sicilian painter Carmelo
Reggi and works by the great Croatian painter Vlaho Bukovac.
Cloister of the Franciscan Monastery
A
picturesque cloister of the Franciscan Monastery in Cavtat. The church
is known as the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, the heavenly patron
of Cavtat. This church is attached to the monastery and located at
the foot of the mountain Sv Rok, near the waterfront. It was built
in the 15th century and contains many valuable paintings. There is
a freize above the chancel arch by the local-born painter Vlaho Bukovac
depicting Cavtat harbour view from the seaside, protected by Our Lady of the Snow. This church also contains an exquisite Mediaeval altarpiece, a polyptych
of St. Michael (1510), the only known surviving work of the Dubrovnik
Renaissance painter Vicko Lovrin, son of Lovro Dobričević. Ruins of
Cavtat's ancient amphitheatre have been unearthed near this church:
still more lies under the sea.
The Pinakoteka of the Church of St. Nicholas
Next
to the parish church of St Nicholas, an opus of baroque architecture,
the art gallery is located, founded in 1952 thanks to Academic Cvito
Fiskovic and many others. It keeps sacral treasures, paintings and
objects of art, which the residents were giving to the church as solemn
promises to the patron saint of the seafarers throughout the centuries.
Next to numerous pieces of work of the Italian masters from the 15th
and 16th century, the art gallery also contains some works of Vlaho
Bukovac, a Cavtat-born painter, undoubtedly among the best few painters
in Croatia.
Cultural Centre of Cavtat
It
is a spacious, recently renovated building in downtown Cavtat, on the
foot of St Rok hill and just next to the Hotel Supetar. Many exhibitions,
concerts and cultural events have been held in this hall. The music

A wise advise
How to avoid the hassle and summer crowd?
Happily, there's a simple answer. Base yourself 17km
from Dubrovnik down the coast in the small harbour town of Cavtat (pronounced "tsavtat"),
less than 45 minutes by boat or bus from central Dubrovnik.
In Cavtat you will have the best of both worlds. You
can enjoy the relaxed rhythm of life in a colourful waterfront community, while
knowing that you can sample the attractions of Dubrovnik whenever you like
(connecting services run every half hour or so).
